Newton County Release Meanings
A release from Newton County Jail means that one local custody episode ended. It does not always mean the person went home. The Newton County Sheriff serves as jailor and keeps the jail docket, so the docket is the key local record. Its Bookout Date and time can establish when the person physically left. The release disposition and receiving-agency fields answer the next question: whether the exit was on bond, after time served, by court order, or as a transfer.
A person may move from Newton County custody to the Mississippi Department of Corrections, another county, federal custody, or an immigration hold. Parole and earned-release supervision place a person in the community under continuing authority. Final discharge means the sentence and supervision authority have ended. These terms must not be merged. A missing name or an empty search result proves neither release nor discharge.
Newton County Release Types
The reason for a Newton County release controls which record should be checked next. A court may authorize bond or dismiss a charge, while the jail documents the actual exit. MDOC records govern a state sentence. Another agency's hold may redirect the person even after the local basis for confinement ends.
| Release type | Meaning | Best next record |
|---|---|---|
| Bond | Conditions were met and processing finished, but the case continues. | Bond order plus jail bookout |
| Time served | Credited custody reached the required county-sentence endpoint. | Judgment, time record, and bookout |
| Dismissal or not guilty | The charge no longer supports that custody, subject to other holds. | Court disposition plus bookout |
| Parole or ERS | Community placement continues under state supervision. | MDOC and Parole Board records |
| Transfer | The person left Newton County Jail for another custodian. | Receiving agency and its locator |
| Final discharge | The sentence and supervision jurisdiction ended. | Discharge certificate and final court record |
Probation is different from parole. A court imposes probation as a community sentence or status. The Parole Board permits parole before a prison sentence expires. Earned-release supervision, often called ERS, is community placement in which the person keeps inmate status under MDOC jurisdiction. Escape and death can also remove a person from an ordinary roster, but neither is a release.
Newton County Release Record Fields
Newton's sampled weekly booking histories are unusually useful for time. They show exact Bookout Date timestamps for included booking episodes. Yet sampled media copies redact Release Type and Release Officer. The official jail-docket record is therefore needed to fill the central gap between the time of exit and the reason for it.
| Field | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Name, aliases, birth date, ID | Which person the record concerns |
| Booking Number and date/time | The exact Newton County custody episode |
| Arresting agency and charge | Who brought the person in and the stated custody basis |
| Bookout Date and time | When that jail episode ended |
| Release type or disposition | Bond, order, time served, transfer, or another reason |
| Court and bond | The tribunal and legal authority tied to release |
| Receiving agency | Whether another custodian took the person |
| Booking photograph | Appearance at intake, not guilt or current status |
The official Newton County Sheriff page identifies the Sheriff as keeper of the jail docket. The captured source shows the office and contact route used when an online result leaves questions.
That agency page does not supply a public roster, release filter, request form, fee schedule, or posted retention rule. A direct, narrow records request remains the official path.
Request Newton County Release Records
Address a written request to the Newton County Sheriff's Office at 300 Access Road, Decatur, MS 39327, or fax it to 601-635-5768. No jail-specific online form was found. Identify an existing record and a narrow date range rather than asking the office to create a new report.
- Give the full name, known aliases, birth date if known, and an approximate booking window.
- Request the jail-docket or booking-history entry, booking and bookout timestamps, release disposition, and receiving agency.
- Ask for the releasing court, bond data, and booking photograph when those fields are needed.
- Request electronic copies and an itemized cost estimate before chargeable work begins.
- If content is withheld, ask for the cited exemption and all reasonably separable nonexempt portions.

Can the weekly archive replace a request? No. It is a secondary booking-date cohort, not the complete jail docket. Its Bookout Date can identify the right episode, but redacted fields may leave the destination unknown.
Note: Ask for one known booking episode first; a narrow scope makes identity, timing, possible exemptions, and estimated cost easier to address.
Newton County Release Record Laws
The Mississippi Public Records Act, Miss. Code §§25-61-1 and following, broadly covers public records, including photographs and films. Nonexempt records must be available under reasonable office procedures. The official text allows actual costs for search, review, duplication, and mailing, so a requester should seek an estimate rather than assume that copies are free.
The Act generally limits production or denial to seven working days under an adopted procedure. If production cannot occur by then, the office must give a specific written explanation, and production is generally due within fourteen working days unless the parties agree otherwise. Exempt parts must be redacted while separable public portions are released. A denial must be written and cite its basis.
Law-enforcement investigative material, juvenile records, sealed files, expunged records, and other protected content may be withheld. Miss. Code §25-1-109 also limits identity disclosure in specified misdemeanor circumstances. Under Miss. Code §99-19-71, a qualifying expungement may remove public access even while an older newspaper copy remains online. Expungement means a court-ordered clearing of a qualifying public record, not an automatic result of release.
Note: A secondary archive may persist after an official record changes, so a current court order and custodian response carry more weight.
Newton County Bond Release Proof
Newton County Justice Court conducts bond hearings and preliminary hearings in felony matters. A bond order gives legal authority for a possible release. It does not establish that jail processing finished or that no other hold applied. The Bookout Date and time in the jail docket establish the operational exit.
Pair the two records. First, obtain the bond order from the court. Then match it to the same booking episode and bookout timestamp. Ask the Sheriff whether a detainer or another agency changed the destination. A bond can remain in force in the Newton case while another custody obligation prevents a direct trip home.
Note: A bond amount or signed order is not a release timestamp; the Newton County jail docket supplies the actual bookout time.
Find Newton County Released Inmates
Begin with the last known custodian. The Newton County Appeal archive can provide a local clue, but the Sheriff confirms a county-jail bookout. MDOC handles people who entered state custody. The sentencing court supplies the order or case outcome, while MS SAVIN can provide a status alert that should be checked with the contributing agency.
- Search the weekly archive near the booking date. Record the Booking Number, Bookout Date, Court, and any detainer or agency reference.
- Call the Sheriff at 601-635-4401 or request the jail-docket record. Ask for release type and receiving agency.
- Search MDOC when a state sentence or transfer is possible. Read Location and Unit before the Tentative Release Date.
- Use the Court field to obtain the bond, judgment, dismissal, amended order, or other disposition from the correct tribunal.
- Check MS SAVIN for the exact agency record and use a notice as a prompt for source confirmation.
- Use BOP or ICE only when federal or immigration custody is supported by the facts.
- If nothing appears online, submit the narrow custodian request. A blank result is inconclusive.
A person booked months earlier may be absent from the newspaper's week even if released during it. A person listed with Bookout Date “N/A” had no recorded bookout when the report was printed. Neither fact should be converted into a custody conclusion. The Newton County Jail release route gives the facility-specific contact and bookout steps.
Newton County MDOC Release Search
The MDOC offender search accepts First Name, Last Name, and MDOC ID Number. Use the ID when available, then compare the detail record's birth date, offense, sentence, and County of Conviction before choosing a match. “Newton” as the conviction county does not mean the person is housed in Newton County.
The critical fields are Entry Date, Location, Unit, Location Change Date, sentence details, and Tentative Release Date. A future tentative date is an estimate. An ERS unit can mean the person is in the community while still under MDOC jurisdiction. Final discharge needs stronger proof, such as an MDOC discharge certificate or final status from Records.
The official MDOC search screen shows the actual name and ID inputs used for a Newton County state-custody inquiry.
The image reinforces the system boundary. MDOC is appropriate after a state commitment, not for someone who only bonded out of Newton County Jail. For time, jail credit, or eligibility records, contact MDOC Records at P.O. Box 24388, Jackson, MS 39225, 601-933-2889, or MDOCRecordsDepartment@mdoc.state.ms.us.
Newton County Weekly Release Clues
No official Newton County current roster, recent-release filter, 24-hour list, 72-hour list, or Sheriff app was found in the reviewed official channels. The closest local web source is the Newton County Appeal Crime archive. Its weekly “Booking History With Photos” reports are described as compiled from the jail's daily blotter.
Each sampled report covers people booked in a stated seven-day window. It is not a list of all people released during that week. A long-stay person booked before the window may not appear at all. A recent booking may still show “N/A” at print time. When a Bookout Date appears, it marks the end of that local episode, but the sampled Release Type field is redacted.
Why did a name leave the roster? No official live Newton roster was located, so disappearance from any short web view is weak evidence. Confirm the exact booking, bookout, disposition, and receiving agency with the Sheriff.
Note: The Appeal archive is a weekly editorial source based on booking date, not an official list of all Newton County releases.
Court Routes for Newton Releases
Newton release documents can be divided among Justice Court, municipal courts, and Circuit Court. Use the Court field in the booking entry as the routing key. Justice Court handles county misdemeanors and bond or preliminary proceedings in felony matters. Newton and Decatur municipal courts appear in sample booking rows. Circuit Court holds felony and other records within its jurisdiction.
The Mississippi Electronic Courts portal became a relevant Circuit route after a 2024 authorization for Newton civil and criminal filing and dockets. It does not absorb municipal or Justice Court matters. Search for the judgment, sentencing order, dismissal, revocation, or amended order, then pair it with the jail timestamp.
The Newton Circuit Clerk court page describes docket and order records held by the office. Published county and clerk sources conflict on some phone and fax numbers, so confirm the current contact through the specific source used before sending a request.
Newton County Supervision After Release
Parole, probation, and ERS may all involve MDOC Community Corrections, but each begins under different authority. A court order proves probation. MDOC and the Mississippi State Parole Board address parole. MDOC's location and time records identify ERS, a supervised community phase in which inmate status continues.
- Parole
- Community service of part of a prison sentence after a Parole Board grant.
- Probation
- A community sentence or status imposed by a court.
- ERS
- Earned-release supervision under continuing MDOC inmate status and jurisdiction.
- Discharge
- The end of sentence and supervision authority.
- Detainer
- A request or hold from another agency that may redirect release.
The Southeast Region reentry guide maps the Newton Probation & Parole Office and also identifies the Circuit Clerk as a criminal-case record contact. That creates a local path between the supervision status and the judgment behind it. The field office at 89B West Broad Street, Decatur, can route questions about local reporting, but it is not a jail or a public release database. More detail appears under Post-Release Supervision.
Travel After Newton County Release
MDOC says it may purchase an in-state bus ticket, when requested, to the requested destination or nearest city. It does not pay out-of-state travel. This limited option applies to release from state custody and should not be treated as a Newton County Jail service.
No county transportation plan, family waiting area, release door, release schedule, or property-pickup procedure was found. Ask the Sheriff about jail-specific logistics before arranging a pickup. For an MDOC release, direct ticket and destination questions to the assigned case manager because the exact release process can change with approval and custody status.
Note: The MDOC in-state bus option does not establish transportation from Newton County Jail and does not cover travel beyond Mississippi.
Federal and ICE Newton Releases
Use the BOP Inmate Locator only for a federal prisoner. It supports name searches and several agency number types. A past release date with no facility, or a Location marked RELEASED, means the person is no longer in BOP custody. It does not rule out federal supervision or custody held elsewhere. USMS may use local contract beds, and its legal authority comes from the federal court.
The ICE Online Detainee Locator System covers current detainees and people reported released from ICE custody within the prior 60 days. Search by A-number and country of birth, or by name and country of birth with the requested identity details. After that rolling window, use the proper immigration or court record.
An ICE “released” result marks the end of the ICE custody segment. It does not by itself prove unrestricted community release or resolve the Newton criminal case. Likewise, leaving a Newton USMS bed can mean transfer to another contract jail, federal court release, or later commitment to BOP.
Note: Federal and ICE locators answer agency-specific custody questions and should not be used to infer the end of every hold.
Newton County Detainer Release Checks
Sample weekly reports include MDOC-detainer bookings followed by a Newton bookout. In that setting, “released from Newton County Jail” may mean only that the local detainer episode ended. MDOC custody can continue. The booking agency, hold description, release disposition, and receiving agency become central facts.
Search the MDOC detail after such a bookout. Read Location and Unit before relying on a date. An active institution points to state confinement. An ERS location points to supervised community placement, not final discharge. If the state record is unclear, ask Newton County for the receiving agency and MDOC Records for the existing status or discharge document.
Newton County Release Status Compared
Each search system answers a limited question. A current-custody view shows who is held now, while a release record explains a past jail exit. A statewide offender detail covers MDOC custody and community status. Federal and immigration systems describe only their own custody segments.
| System or record | What it can establish | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| Newton jail docket | Booking, bookout, disposition, and receiving agency | A bookout may be a transfer |
| Weekly Appeal PDF | A clue for people booked in that report window | Not a full release list or official roster |
| MDOC detail | State location, unit, sentence, and tentative date | Does not cover an ordinary county bond-out |
| Court docket | Bond, judgment, dismissal, or other legal authority | Does not prove when jail processing ended |
| MS SAVIN | A contributed status change or notification | Not a certified release record |
| BOP or ICE | End of that federal or ICE custody segment | Does not prove release from all custody |
When records disagree, compare identity, agency, booking episode, event time, and system scope. The originating custodian controls its own record. An alert or archive entry is a lead; the jail, corrections department, or court supplies the underlying proof.
Newton County Release Facility
Newton County Jail is the only local detention facility resolved from the official map. It is operated by the Newton County Sheriff's Office at 300 Access Road in Decatur. The Newton Probation & Parole Office is a field office, not a jail. No current MDOC prison, BOP institution, or ICE detention center was located in Newton County in the official directories reviewed.
A person released to the community after bond, dismissal, a court order, or a county sentence remains a county-record question. A transfer to MDOC begins a state-custody search. A federal or ICE fact calls for its own locator and court record. In every path, the Newton bookout time should be paired with the release disposition and next custodian.
Note: Sheriff office hours and a fixed jail release schedule were not published, so call 601-635-4401 before making an in-person trip.
